Drinking & Driving >
Direct Encouragement
Designating an individual to abstain from drinking alcohol beverages has been a common approach to ensure that a sober person takes the wheel at the end of an evening. Regrettably, there are some who disregard the risks associated with drinking and driving, or are unaware of the designated driver concept altogether. In response, varied programmes provide incentives to designate a driver or to encourage the use of alternative safe modes of transportation.
Vouchers and Discounts
- Many programmes distribute taxi vouchers or offer discounts for alternative safe ways to travel home safely. These options are designed to persuade those who have had too much to drink and had thought of driving home to reconsider. Beyond simply getting an individual home safely on the evening in question, these programmes seek to raise awareness about alternative ways home.
Complimentary Goods and Services
- Other campaigns directly encourage safe and responsible behaviour by offering complimentary non-alcoholic goods, such as food or soft-drinks, to designated drivers. Other complimentary services are also offered, such as bus or taxi rides or prepaid phone cards to call and request a pick-up by a sober driver.
Gifts and Prizes
- Other programmes discourage drink driving by offering gifts or prizes to designated drivers. Gifts and prizes are typically bestowed at the end of the event.
Community Advocacy
- Other programmes use subtle and creative community pressure to encourage safe practices. Some of these overlap with giving gifts and prizes, but the methods of encouragement take on a different form.
